Audrey Boy is an interdisciplinary artist living and working on Snuneymuxw Nation territory in the City of Nanaimo. Having grown up in a remote, boat-access-only community on the northwest coast of Vancouver Island, she draws inspiration from the land that raised her and the stories from her family and community that have shaped her sense of identity and connection to the world. Known for her contemplative art, which incorporates traditional egg tempera painting methods, mixed media drawing, printmaking, and textiles, her recent work with iconography has led to commissions from St. Peter’s Catholic Church and Neighbourhood Mennonite Brethren Church in Nanaimo, BC, as well as Fleetwood Christian Reformed Church in Surrey, BC. Her creative practice is inspired by and centered on her experiences with spirituality. Using stories and symbols passed down through her faith tradition, she creates contemporary icons that resonate with the voice of her time and invite reflection on the essence of Love. She holds a BFA in Illustration from Emily Carr University of Art and Design (2023). Her artwork is collected both locally and internationally in Canada and the United States.
Manifesto
I create for love.
For love ignites purpose -
and purpose sparks hope, builds character, and gives strength.
For conceptual strength, I create with integrity,
For integrity births honesty, humility, and truthtelling.
For the telling of truthful stories, I create through listening.
For listening feeds growth, vulnerability, and patience,
And patience produces wisdom, and wisdom cherishes love;
And love is a creative breath which seeks a body, so all work must flow from the eyes of the soul to be born through physical means; embracing unexpected and uncontrollable processes and materials, celebrating the inconsistencies of handiwork.
For I believe beauty is born from living.
So everything must become alive,
And every beautiful thing living will be useful for leading to love.
